Description:
The Master of Arts in Teaching program offers two paths for prospective elementary school teachers: a concentration in Public Education, and a concentration in Jewish Day Schools. Each concentration combines a year of guided teaching practice with formal study of principles and practices of instruction; philosophical, historical, and sociological contexts of education; and child study. As a culminating activity, MAT candidates design and execute a classroom-based research project. Program themes are: Teaching for understanding, knowing students as learners, inquiry, and teaching for social justice. Candidates work closely with colleagues, faculty, and experienced mentor teachers in this intensive, cohort-based, one year & two summer program. The concentration in Public Education at the Elementary level is suitable for recent B.A. recipients and for mid-career professionals seeking a change in direction. The concentration in Jewish Day Schools is an option for graduates of the DeLeT program.

Degree(s):
MAT – Elementary (Concentrations in: Public Education or Jewish Day Schools)

Research Areas:
Public elementary school education; Jewish day school education
