Description:
Philosophy, Cosmology and Consciousness is a unique course of study designed for
students who wish to engage the intellectual challenge, in our postmodern age,
of exploring and formulating new understandings of the cosmos, society, and the
human being.
The Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness concentration is committed to a
larger, more encompassing vision of philosophy than has long characterized
conventional academic programs. This vision reflects the origins of philosophy
in classical antiquity while incorporating contemporary findings from the
natural and human sciences. The course of study addresses the complex relations
between philosophy, religion, science, and the arts as these converge to shape
the worldview of a culture. It encourages students to draw on the insights and
perspectives of other eras and cultures, as well as on the most recent evidence
and theories emerging from current research.
Areas of inquiry include cosmology, depth psychology, evolutionary science,
cultural history, religious studies, and metaphysics, as well as history of
ideas, evolution of consciousness, archetypal studies, esoteric thought,
mythology, transpersonal theory, new paradigm studies, ecology, feminism, and
the changing relationship between science and spirituality.

Description:
The Transformative Learning and Change concentration of the Humanities Doctoral
program is designed for learners who wish to combine innovative scholarship with
a commitment to action. The concentration stresses the development of capacities
to design and facilitate change in individuals, groups, organizations, and
cultures. In the process, learners themselves are changed.
Students come to the program with diverse educational and work backgrounds,
including education, the arts, psychology, business, community development, and
the environment. The pedagogy and learning environment allows students to bring
all of themselves to the educational process, and facilitates the development of
strong academic capacities, including critical and creative thinking, the use of
innovative qualitative research methodologies, and a transdisciplinary
sensibility. Students are encouraged to draw from literature, the arts,
narrative methods, and spiritual traditions in their learning. The
transdisciplinary context of our research aims not just to describe, but to
change human systems.
This doctoral program focuses on collaborative learning, dialogue, and
self-reflection, and encourages learners to bring their full experience and
goals squarely into the educational process. Learners prepare themselves for
engaging contemporary cultural dilemmas by transforming their capacities for
communicative learning (pursued through dialogue) and emancipatory learning
(exploration of one's own underlying assumptions and explanatory
stories.)>p>This degree offers Distance Learning options

Description:
The Transformative Studies online community at CIIS includes students from all
over the world. The programs stress ample individual attention and personal
interaction with fellow students and professors; the intimacy of seminar-based
classes; the relationship between academic research and personal growth; and the
formation of an online learning community where students interact on an ongoing
basis.
Students in the master’s and doctoral degree programs meet each August and
January with faculty for a 4–5 day intensive at a retreat setting in the San
Francisco Bay Areato receive face-to-face advising, attend workshops, give
presentations, and discuss their work.
The Transformative Leadership online MA program is for individuals who have the
initiative, passion, and vision to facilitate positive social change and to make
a significant contribution to the world. Students recognize that effective
leadership requires specific skills in conflict resolution, group dynamics, and
creative thinking. Also important is the ability to reflect on why change is
needed, how it is conducted, and who is engaged in the process. Students ground
their work in an action site, where they apply their learning on an ongoing
basis. The MA program culminates in a capstone project to be conducted within
the action site.
The online PhD in Transformative Studies at CIIS provides students with the
platform to pursue cutting-edge research for a topic of their choosing. Under
the mentorship of an advisor, and in conjunction with a collaborative community
of learners, students engage in scholarship that is original, personally
meaningful, and transdisciplinary. Students are exposed to a plurality of
perspectives and disciplines and learn how to excavate the underlying
assumptions and paradigms that inform them, and learn ways of inquiry that
connect and contextualize in order to integrate different, even divergent,
perspectives in a coherent way.
