Description:
The Biological Sciences Department offers a program leading to a Master's of Science degree. The program provides the student with a broad background in the biological sciences that serves as good preparation for employment in industry and/or civil service, for many types of biological work that require advanced training beyond the bachelor's degree, for teaching at the elementary, secondary and community college levels, for independent research, and continued graduate work at other institutions. Approximately 25 students are on campus involved in study and research. An additional 15 students continue their thesis research or other aspects of their degree program off-campus. Full-time students can complete the M.S. degree requirements in two years. Upon completion of the program our students enroll in Ph.D. programs or allied health profession programs at other universities or enter careers in teaching, industry, or with governmental agencies.

Description:
Our masters degree program emphasizes materials science applications in engineering. Currently, you will be one of only a handful of graduate students working for your advisor, receiving individual faculty guidance for your thesis. Students completing a masters degree with a specialization in materials can select specific study tracks that enable them to develop in-depth knowledge in specific areas of technology. Cal Poly’s MS-MATE program is a project-based degree that focuses on the blending of fundamental theory with applied design. Typically, students who complete this program will move directly into professional positions and are not inclined to pursue research-based advanced degrees, such as a Ph.D. The MS-MATE program will enable students to explore more advanced technology tracks (such as bioengineering or microsystems) and requires them to complete a thesis based on an advanced applied design project.

Degree(s):
M.S. - Engineering, Materials Engineering Specialization
