Description:
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carnegie Mellon offers
both M.S. and Ph.D. programs, each with various interdisciplinary options.
Graduate study in the department is designed to provide fundamental scientific
knowledge and engineering methodologies for the development of professional
engineering competence and scholarly ability. Each program is planned
individually with faculty consultation to build upon the student's background
and to meet the student's particular objectives.
At Carnegie Mellon, civil and environmental engineering has a long and
respected tradition. Graduates from the program have developed as successful and
contributing members of the practicing profession, as industrial leaders and
world-class researchers, and as educators. Innovative research contributions
have ranged from special tools for structural design to unique building
materials, to environmental control technologies and background data on global
air pollution. The present faculty are typical of this heritage--a group of
diverse individuals representing a broad range of specialties. Their areas of
interest and work tend to concentrate on the challenging and important problems
at the frontier of knowledge.
