The School of Music offers the Master of Arts degree in musicology with an
emphasis in music history or theory; ajoint degree program in music
librarianship (Master of Arts degree in musicology and the Master of Science
inLibrary Science); the Master of Liturgical Music degree; and the Master of
Music degree in accompanying andchamber music (piano), composition, instrumental
conducting, music education with an emphasis on the Kodaly method, orchestral
instruments (performance: violin, viola, cello, string bass, solo woodwind and
brass instruments, percussion, harp, and classical guitar), organ or harpsichord
performance, piano performance,piano pedagogy, vocal pedagogy, and vocal
performance. A nondegree music teacher education program also is offered.

The School of Architecture and Planning is dedicated to the professional

The Department of Physics offers programs leading to the degrees of Master of
Science and Doctor of Philosophy.These degrees are designed to prepare the
candidate for a professional research career. Research areas includematerials
science, astrophysics, nuclear, condensed matter, statistical, and vitreous
state physics. In addition,arrangements can be made for cooperative research
projects in nearby governmental laboratories such as NASA'sGoddard Space Flight
Center,the Naval Research Laboratory , and the National Institute of Standards
andTechnology . All incoming students must take a preliminary examination at the
undergraduate level at the beginning of their first semester of residence. The
exam serves as a diagnostic tool for course placement.

For graduate students, the doctorate and master’s degrees are offered in
American government, political theory, and world politics. Off-campus MA
programs are offered on Capitol Hill in Congressional Studies and at the
Pentagon in International Affairs. A joint program is offered in political
economy with the Department of Economics. Qualified students may also complete a
joint JD/MA with Columbus School of Law. Our Washington location enables great
