Description:
The Department of the Classics offers graduate training in Greek and Latin
language, literature and culture, Medieval Latin, and Byzantine and Modern
Greek. The faculty of the Department represents a broad variety of fields and
approaches. Several members of the faculty have joint appointments with other
departments, including Comparative Literature, History, History of Art and
Architecture, Linguistics, andPhilosophy. The Department is housed in Boylston
Hall, next to Widener Library, which contains the largest open-stack collection
in the world. The Smyth Classical Library also has a separate collection of some
9000 volumes, and the Sackler Museum contains an excellent collection
ofantiquities.

Description:
Graduate study leading up to the Ph.D. degree is supervised by a faculty
advisory committee made up in accordance with each student's aims and interests.
Fields of teaching and research include atmospheric chemistry, dynamic
meteorology, economic geology, geochemistry, geophysics, mineralogy,
oceanography, paleontology, petrology, sedimentology, seismology, stratigraphy,
and structural geology. In addition, courses may be taken in chemistry, physics,
engineering, or biology. Under reciprocal arrangements, graduate students at
Harvard may take and receive credit for courses given at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in Cambridge and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
