Description:
The IslandWood Graduate Residency in Education, Environment and Community, in
partnership with the University of Washington, is a unique immersion experience
in learning and teaching at one of the nation's most innovative and sustainable
campuses. Graduate studies include ecologically based courses in education and
professionally mentored teaching of children from urban Seattle and surrounding
counties in our four-day residential program. Using cultural and natural
communities as a context for learning, graduate students learn to teach children
the importance of environmental and community stewardship. During the 10-month
residency on IslandWood's 255-acre campus, featuring a pond, bog, marsh, ravine,
forest and estuary, graduate students complete 39 credits and earn a Certificate
in Education for Environment and Community from the University of Washington.
During a second year, graduate students can choose to complete one of several
master's degrees at the University of Washington or a Master in Teaching/Teacher
Certification from City University.
