Description:
The Graduate Program in Writing and Consciousness at New College of
California was created in 1998 in the heart of the Mission District in San
Francisco. Our weekend-based program seeks to offer to the aspiring writer
an alternative way of approaching both writing itself and the active
consciousness that must be created in anykind of intellectual endeavor. We
are not just another creative writing program with a curriculum focused
almost exclusively on craft. Our understanding of writing comes from a
deeply political belief that the creative act is a way of acquiring
awareness of self and world.

Description:
The MA in Humanities and Leadership graduate degree is offered in a three
semester—one full year—program that challenges traditional notions of
leadership studies. Our investigations look to the humanities for strong
visions of leadership. Relying heavily on ideas and methods that emerge
mainly from literature, art, music, and history, we encourage a broad and
humane understanding of leadership, distinguishing it in part from more
"scientific" studies in management. We initiate a lifelong process of
exploration and questioning, linking the intuitive creative processes to the
learning of leadership skills. The momentum built up in the year of classes
and the research and writing of a thesis encourages our students to keep the
process of learning alive in the home, in the workplace, and in the world at
large.

Description:
The Irish Studies Program at New College of California offers an
interdisciplinary curriculum focused on the history, literature, language
and culture of Ireland and the Irish diaspora. The program is fundamentally
shaped by the conviction that Irish Studies needs to engage with the
worldwide dispersal of the Irish as an integral part of its project, as well
as with the rich and varied histories of all parts of the island of Ireland.
Within this broad focus, we work to emphasize the linkages which exist
between Irish and other ethnic communities, the struggles for social justice
in Northern Ireland, and the importance of understanding experience in both
Ireland and the Irish diaspora in a global context. In addition to its
intrinsic social, political and cultural importance, a B.A. or M.A. degree
in Irish Studies is an important resouce which can lead to work in teaching,
NGOs, non-profit work, cultural productions and exchanges, as well as
advanced degree study.
