Description:
At Pacific Oaks College, students may design a program whereby the majority of classes may be taken online.  On-line classes are scheduled in the Fall and Spring semesters.  The M.A. degree in Human Development is offered with specializations in Leadership, Bicultural Development or Early Childhood Education.  Mature students without a completed B.A., may qualify for admission through the Assessment By Life Experience (ABLE) option toward either the M.A. or the B.A. degree.  Most of the course-work for a California Early Childhood Education Specialist Credential may also be taken online.  The 15-unit Postgraduate Certificate in Human Development or Early Childhood Education is open to students with a M.A.  Certificate students may complete all of their course-work online.  All online degree students (with the exception of the Postgraduate Certificate students) must take at least two classes on-site.  Most distance-learning students take advantage of the one-week long courses offered in January and in the summer at three West Coast locations (Pasadena and Oakland, California and Seattle, Washington).  Weekend classes and summer sessions are also available.

Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena is offering an innovative Masters in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling with a specialization in African American Family Studies. This program is based on the principles of UJIMA which utilizes the strength of the African American family-centered culture as its basis for a collective learning experience. Students admitted to this program will obtain a clear, in-depth understanding of the specific mental health needs of African American children, adults, and families. In addition they will acquire the sensitivity and the cultural and clinical competencies to work effectively with African American Communities.

 

Accreditation Description:
The MFCC Program is fully accredited and fulfills the Board of Behavioral Science Examiners' educational requirements. Pacific Oaks College is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Description:
Based on the "Comadre/Compadre" extended family model, the Latina/o Family Studies program utilizes the strengths of the Latina/o family-centered culture as its basis for a collective learning experience. Students in this program will gain an in-depth understanding of the specific mental health needs of children and families in Latina/o communities. They will also acquire the necessary cultural and cross-cultural sensitivity and clinical competence to effectively serve this community. This specialization is offered in a cohort format, meeting one three-day weekend a month. If you're interested in working with children and families and other mental health professionals; if you're interested in learning from experienced faculty in small informal classes, our program is for you.

Description:
The M.A. in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling at Pacific Oaks College is designed to train child and family therapists with a strong clinical/community background to practice therapy using a collaborative model that is respectful of the client's values and experiences. Students are required to critically examine their own attitudes, beliefs and values in order to become skilled, sensitive, culturally competent family therapists.

Description:
The mission of the Teacher Education Program at Pacific Oaks College is to prepare professional educators who understand diversity, are grounded in human development, and value children. We provide preparation programs that are based on constructionist approaches to education. Our credential programs may be combined with the Bachelor's or Master's degree in Human Development. We offer the preliminary California Multiple Subject English Learner Teaching Credential that prepares a student to teach in California's diverse classrooms. This program can be completed in a self-paced, intensive or intern format. We also offer the California Education Specialist Credential in Mild to Moderate Disabilities, which certifies you to teach students with mild to moderate learning, behavioral and developmental disabilities in a variety of settings in either a public or private school. The Preliminary Level I Education Specialist Credential can be completed in five to seven semesters. The Professional Level II program must be completed in within five years of the Level I credential.

All online degree students must take at least two classes on-site, Most distance learning students take advantage of Pacific Oaks one-week intensives offered in January and in the summer at three West Coast locations (Pasadena, near metropolitan Los Angeles; Hayward, in the San Francisco Bay Area; and Seattle). Two successive weeks of intensives may be taken. Weekend classes (on three full weekends a month apart) andsummer sessions are also available.
