Description:
Osteopathic medicine offers a comprehensive approach to health care. The Doctor
of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) program is rooted in the osteopathic philosophy
that there is an innate connection between mind, body and spirit. Students learn
to examine and treat the whole person, not just the symptoms.
With PCOM's integrated curriculum approach, students benefit from hands on
learning from the start. During the first and second years, classroom study of
anatomy and physiology, for example, is paired with hands-on learning of
physical examination principles and osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). At
the same time, students build strong interpersonal skills.
The third and fourth years provide students with a series of clerkships in a
variety of settings, including PCOM's Healthcare Centers in medically
underserved communities.
Training in osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is incorporated into the
education of all osteopathic physicians. This provides a better understanding of
how an injury or illness in one part of the body can affect another. With OMM,
DOs use their hands to diagnose injury and illness and to encourage the bodys
natural tendency toward good health through manipulation of the musculoskeletal
system.
PCOM graduates are competitive in the countrys best residency programs, both
osteopathic and allopathic.
