Description:
As scientific research has become more and more multidisciplinary, the nature of most graduate training programs has become more and more specialized. To combat this trend towards over-specialization, Rutgers-Newark has initiated a multidisciplinary training program in Cellular and Molecular Biodynamics. This program, funded in part by the National Science Foundation, draws together faculty from the departments of Biological Sciences,Chemistry,, Physics and Center and Molecular Neuroscience. Each department has both a strongindependent research program and a dedication to graduate research training. The participatingfaculty all have in common an active research interest in the physical mechanisms underlyingvarious biological phenomena, complementary technical and/or methodological approaches, andmost importantly, the proven ability to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and levels inpursuit of research interests. The goal of the program is to train students in research techniques, methodologies and issues that are outside the range of typical programs in any single disciplinesuch as Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Neuroscience.

The joint Rutgers-Newark/UMDNJ Graduate Program in Integrative Neuroscience (INS) provides students with research-oriented training in current integrative neuroscience. The Ph.D. program provides a multidisciplinary approach to the study of molecules, neural systems, brain, behavior, and cognition.

The faculty of the Integrative Neuroscience Graduate Program is made up of members of the Center for Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience (CMBN), the department of Psychology, and the department of Biological Sciences at Rutgers-Newark, plus faculty from the department of Neuroscience at the nearby University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey- New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ) and the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). The faculty of the Integrative Neuroscience Program is committed to a multidisciplinary and integrative approach to neuroscience research utilizing the latest techniques. The innovative approaches that are now possible with molecular biological, immunological and neuroanatomical techniques, and technologies for imaging the human brain (such as the MRI), have provided the opportunity for unprecedented elucidation of the basic neuronal mechanisms underlying adaptive behavior in animals and humans, including higher cognitive functions such as speech, language and cognition. With new opportunities has come the need to develop new training initiatives, since an understanding of basic principles is required to thoroughly integrate basic and clinical research.
