Description:
A variety of graduate level MSc programs are offered by St. George's University School of Medicine. In these programs, students may pursue a stand-alone MSc degree or a dual MD/MSc degree. The research programs cover the areas of Microbiology, Neuroscience, Epidemiology, Public Health, Ecology, Immunology, and other areas of Tropical Medicine. The curriculum reflects those areas of investigative research that enhance preventive medicine and healthcare delivery in Grenada and other Caribbean states. Medical students who wish to obtain this combined degree will spend more time in Grenada for the investigative work, the thesis, and the intense preclinical MD curriculum that make up the course of study for both degrees. Research is partially supported by the WindwardIslands Research and Education Foundation. A minimum of 30 credits is required for the MSc degrees.

Description:
The program is designed to provide rich, laboratory-based research advanced degrees in selected areas of microbiology. It focuses on important facets of the major discipline of microbiology, but within this structure variouspaths can be tailored according to the interests of each individual student. Specific areas of concentration includeClinical Microbiology, Parasitology, Mycology, Immunology, and Virology. Research is partially supported by theWindward Islands Research and Education Foundation.

Description:
This program allows students to undertake a research-oriented Neuroscience specialty while completing the basicscience requirements within the School of Medicine. The program is in collaboration with scientists at WashingtonState University under an exchange agreement. Students take two specialty courses in Neuroscience while at St.George's University; they then proceed to Washington State University where they develop a research project,collect data and prepare their theses.

Description:
The goal of public health is to prevent disease and promote good health by applying scientific and technical knowledge through a focused community effort. The MPH is offered by St. George's University School of Medicineas a stand-alone degree or as dual MD/MPH degree. Its goals are to expand the knowledge base and practice ofpublic health and to maximize the benefits for the population at large. Applicants must have a strong interest in community medicine and a bachelor's degree.

The freestanding MPH program began in August 1999. It is a 10-month, 48-credit program. In this program, students can pursue either a generalized or specialized degree in Epidemiology, Health Policy and Management, or Social and Behavioral Sciences.

Description:
The Public Health Program also offers a combined MD/MPH degree. It provides a unique opportunity for a medicalstudent to pursue a career in public health. Selected medical students will take 36 credits to complete the MPH degree which will include a combination of didactic lectures, a four week hands-on session in a health-related organization and a final paper for faculty presentation. Medical students who enter the combined program will spend an additional six months in the Caribbean to complete their MPH degree.

Graduates of St. George's University Public Health Program will have the knowledge and background to develop,implement and promote policies and programs designed to improve the general health of the population. They willalso be prepared to manage the complexities of public, private and political systems, and develop, implement,analyze and evaluate diverse health and health-related policies and programs. Graduates will be challenged to further long-term improved, public health goals.
