Description:
The mission of the Graduate Literacy Education Program at St. John Fisher College is to prepare teachers who thoroughly understand both the theory and practice of literacy instruction and are well prepared to teach literacy in the modern school. The program is designed for three primary target populations: teachers wishing to specialize in literacy education; elementary or secondary teachers desiring more thorough preparation in teaching literacy in the classroom; special education teachers needing stronger preparation in literacy education. Candidates must be certified in some area of education before entering the M.S. Literacy program.

Description:
This program, designed to create graduates who are knowledgeable in both the theory and practice of special education, prepares students to work with the special needs learner in any school setting. It has a unique focus on the linkage between special education and reading, and coursework includes a focus on teaching reading to special needs learners. Because the primary emphasis is placed on the practical application of classroom learning, fieldwork is tied into various classes.

Description:
The Mental Health Counseling program is designed to emphasize the strengths of individuals and families in order to facilitate recovery and resilience when faced with emotional, mental or physical challenges. Students will develop a strong understanding of the psychological foundations of mental health and the related developmental issues. In accordance with standards recommended by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), the program focuses upon counseling areas such as professional identity, social and cultural diversity, human growth and development, helping relationships, career development, group work, assessment, research, program evaluation, and evidence-based intervention skills used in mental health counseling. The MS degree in Mental Health Counseling at St. John Fisher provides students the opportunity to learn this knowledge base through a variety of teaching methodologies, including class discussions, role playing, small group work, case-study analysis, and classroom situations. Students also apply this knowledge in supervised clinical settings.

The MBA program in the Ronald L. Bittner School of Business at St. John Fisher College has a multidisciplinary and balanced curriculum, faculty and environment. Its commitment is to educate tomorrow's managers with the belief that management is not just a set of quantitative and functional skills, but a profoundly human activity. Such an approach gives our MBA students additional dimensions to see, understand and integrate the "whole enterprise" rather than portions of it. There are two program options: One Year MBA and Flexible MBA.

The One-Year and Flex MBA programs are both 48 credit hour programs. Included in these courses is a hands-on consulting capstone project. The project is a field experience where students demonstrate competencies required by the business world. Clients have included large corporations, not-for-profits and educational institutions. It’s a great chance to showcase the skills you have learned through the MBA program and make business contacts within the community.

The Bittner MBA program produces graduates with practical business skills and a global perspective, but more importantly, produces business leaders who can think strategically and critically, who can adapt to change and foster change, who can inspire and lead, and who can create and convey a vision.

The Educational Leadership Program will provide a high-quality program of study and practice that prepares future educational leaders to have the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to provide effective leadership in a variety of complex and diverse school settings. To this end, the program and its faculty are committed to providing the highest level of professional preparation that will enable our candidates to address the challenges and recognize the opportunities in leading a school organization toward achieving standards of excellence.

The goals of the Educational Leadership Program are to prepare leaders who:

Accreditation Description:
Preparing teachers and school leaders to teach and work with all students to meet society’s demands for high performance has created new goals and higher standards for educators. Accreditation is one measure of quality assurance.
The United States Secretary of Education officially recognizes the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE.org) as the national professional accrediting agency for schools, colleges, and departments of education that prepare teachers, administrators and other professional personnel.
The New York State Education Department requires that all colleges that prepare teachers and school personnel have nationally accredited programs by 2006.
The School of Education is a candidate for NCATE accreditation and will be hosting the Board of Examiners visit which includes a national and state team from October 29 through November 2, 2005. The SoE will conduct a mock visit June 6-8, 2005. The purpose of the mock visit is to determine readiness for the Board of Examiners Visit. The SoE faculty and staff are in the process of preparing for the review of all initial and professional programs offered by the School of Education.

The Doctoral Program in Executive Leadership at St. John Fisher College is administered by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education (SoE). The accelerated program provides candidates with an opportunity to develop the critical leadership skills and knowledge that are required in today’s increasingly complex, diverse, and information-driven organizations. This unique program in executive leadership was developed to provide an attractive and viable alternative to “traditional” doctoral programs in educational leadership. As an alternative doctoral model, the program is designed to:
Provide executives and senior managers with an advanced curriculum that focuses on relevant and current topics and issues in executive leadership
Focus on the core leadership competencies, dispositions, and applied research that executives and senior managers need to be effective in various organization settings
