Description:
Our Master of Arts in Teaching program provides a "hands-on" learning environment in which student teachers can research and explore educational issues and topics as well as develop their own ideas and continue with their artwork. MAT students learn to bridge the connections between their own artistic process and the creative development of their students, continually to glean new insights and knowledge that enhance their growth as artists and as teachers.

Special attention is given to the developmental stages of childhood through early adulthood. In this way, student teachers become familiar with the emotional needs, behaviors and physical abilities of the students they will teach. Coupled with the traditional student-teaching experience, students work with classroom teachers integrating studio art, museum education and new media into the academic curriculum. Working with diverse populations further prepares students with the understanding and classroom management skills they will need.

Community involvement is another vital component of a teacher's education. The curriculum requirements include fieldwork and student teaching in New York City public schools as well as fieldwork and practica in SVA's community-based children's programs.

Our graduates are given the framework for future inquiry and professional accomplishment. Releasing the imagination through the making of and looking at art offers ways of expressing remembered experiences, present reflections and new possible outcomes. This framework also provides the potential for new insights into a sense of self-identity and placement in the world.

We believe that to teach art you should first be an artist who can use the power of art to open young minds to new experiences and individual fulfillment. One person - a gifted and caring teacher - can still make a difference in a young person's life. Our program is for artists who want to become teachers and make that difference.

Description:
Illustrators take pleasure in the process of making pictures; they seek the satisfactions that come with developing their drawing and painting talent, evolving a "style" that grows organically from their own aesthetic or from deeply held personal or political convictions. The Illustration as Visual Essay program at SVA has been created to help students refine and define their personal vision. We structure our curriculum to broaden students possibilities as figurative artists far beyond the conventional gallery wall to creating within the full range of 21st-century multimedia.

SVA's MFA in Photography and Related Media curriculum breaks with the conventional approaches to teaching photography in the academy and is, instead, responsive to the cross currents of cultural and information exchange. This program will address the students' specific photographic search within the fine arts with personal attention. The graduate program recognizes the crossover of influences in photography as well as the vibrant exchange and interchange of painting, sculpture, and the performing arts. Students are encouraged to view photography not as an isolated medium, but as an integrated one.

Our Master of Professional Studies program encourages the development of student art therapists through a strong clinical foundation combined with intensive training in studio art, art therapy principles and practices, contemporary theories of psychological development and the nature of creativity.An important objective of the MPS program is to challenge the stereotyping of the mentally ill and other populations based on a humanistic approach to the therapeutic process. Essential to this orientation is the concept that the therapist and client work together, and can affect each other's growth and development. As student therapists work with clients, emotional maturity is enhanced, facilitating each student's ability for self-growth.

Degree(s):
M.P.S. - Art Therapy
