The Master of Education program in Physical Education is designed for certified
teachers in k-12 health and physical education interested in the applied study
of teaching, field-based active research, standards-based curriculum
development, and/or the supervision and administration of physical education
programs. The program is structured for certified K-12 PE teachers who wish to
pursue an advanced degree or earn graduate hours for permanent certification or
Act 48 clearances. Non-certified professionals with a strong interest in the
field of physical education are also accepted in the program, based on the
understanding that they prepare for the program via readings and research
suggested by the SRU PE graduate faculty and disseminated by the Graduate
Coordinator. Students will concentrate on individualized professional
development through courses specifically structured to focus on applied teaching
skills and "best practices in teaching physical education," thereby turning
theory into "real world" developmentally-appropriate opportunities for change in
existing K-12 programs. Through courses focusing on current research in physical
education, professionals enrolled in this program will have the opportunity to
learn and apply many health-related fitness activities, standards-based teaching
strategies and technology in their own professional venues. The degree
culminates in a required practicum experience.
