Students may pursue the master's degree in biology as preparation for
doctoral studiesor to gain additional background and training to enter applied
fields in biology. Studentsholding provisional certification as high school
biology teachers may also use theprogram to complete requirements for permanent
certification.
The Department of Biology offers two types of MA degrees: (1) a thesis MA and
(2) anon-thesis MA. The non-thesis option requires the student to take more
formal coursework than the thesis MA and to display competence in several areas
of biology on awritten comprehensive examination.

The computer science program is designed to provide students with a strong
foundation for advanced professional work or doctoral study in the computer
field. Courses are offered in computer software,hardware, theory, and
mathematics. This graduate-level program requires 30 credit hours selected from
three course categories, allowing for both breadth and depth of study. To
accommodate part-time students, most graduate courses are offered in the late
afternoon or evening and meet once a week. Teaching assistantships are available
on a competitive basis. The program does not require a baccalaureate degree in
computer science.

Students enrolled in the Elementary Education graduate program leading to a
Master ofScience in Elementary Education may choose to concentrate in Early
ChildhoodEducation. This early childhood concentration will enhance the
student's understandingof how young children, pre-school to third grade,
experience and process learning. Thestudent will plan and evaluate appropriate
content and learning experiences for thesechildren. In addition, these students
also qualify for the Early Childhood annotation tothe certificate. This
annotation to the transcript indicates specialization in preschool andprimary
grades education. In order for students to qualify for this annotation, they
mustbe employed in an appropriate public or non-public school or be available
for practicumplacements in appropriate early childhood settings.
