Description:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) - This graduate degree is designed for individuals who hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and wish to obtain an initial elementary or secondary teaching certificate along with their master's degree. The graduate secondary certification program has two teaching field options: Social Studies Composite or English/Language Arts. Most full-time students in the M.A.T. program can complete the degree within three or four semesters. Because of the additional certification requirements, the M.A.T. degree is more than the traditional 36-credit hours.
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) - This 36-credit hour graduate program is designed for classroom teachers who wish to pursue a degree which focuses on developing advanced skills in teaching, as well as enriching knowledge in selected content areas. The program is designed to enhance the candidate's appreciation of the art and science of teaching and the ability to understand and critically evaluate education theory and practice. The M.Ed. core courses include Introduction to Graduate Studies and Research,Foundations in Education, Biopsychosocial Dimensions in Education, and Emerging Issues in Education.

The concentration area Second Language Education and Culture is designed to provide teachers an in-depth understanding of cultural issues and appropriate educational practice for non-English speakers. It is for those who plan to teach overseas, teach in community colleges, or teach in language centers with an international perspective. Successful completion of coursework will lead to the TESOL certificate and the Texas state ESL certificate. Students may begin the program in the summer, fall or spring.

Description:
The Graduate Counseling Program at Texas Wesleyan offers a M.A. in Professional Counseling. Classes are offered evenings (6-9 pm), once a week - and/or on Saturdays (9-12). The program is designed for working professionals seeking the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) certificate in Texas. Currently, the program consists of 48 credits designed to train students in the delivery of counseling services. A second program for teachers seeking certification as a school counselor, is being considered for a summer 2006 start.

Description:
The Master of Science in School Counseling is designed to prepare students to become licensed school counselors. The program consists of thirty-six credit hours and a minimum of 150 practicum hours. Courses are offered during the day in the summer and evenings and Saturday mornings during the fall and spring. Upon completion of the course work, practicum hours, and passing the TExES exam for school counseling, students are eligible to be employed as a school counselors in the public or private school setting.
