Description:
he Master of Arts in Teaching programs are developed with the professional teacher in mind. The program will build on the teacher's knowledge base by incorporating curriculum with real world learning in the classroom, school, or other learning environments. The specifically designed emphases have a focus on improving a teacher's "classroom effectiveness" through developing knowledge, dispositions, and abilities derived from current theory and research in education. “Classroom effectiveness” is considered in terms of success at increasing student learning. A vision of accomplished practice articulated by way of fourteen program outcomes guide participants as they complete a series of learning and assessment projects that include a curriculum development project, teacher research study, and professional development portfolio. Critical reflection, systematic inquiry, and collaborative research are emphasized throughout the program, abilities which lend coherence to teachers' efforts in learning to scaffold their own professional development. Faculty members are committed to building a program that is responsive to the needs and interests of teachers who work in a variety of different classroom contexts by making meaningful connections between theory and practice in support of powerful teaching and learning. Our goal is to cultivate the kind of professional wisdom associated with the art of teaching and intelligent use of practical knowledge for the purpose of helping all students achieve high-quality learning outcomes. The Master of Arts in Teaching program focuses on empowering elementary teachers as school leaders for the purpose of improving student learning through the development of meaningful curriculum, authentic instruction, and performance-based assessment.

The major emphases are individualized and flexible to meet graduate students’ needs. Applicants must hold or be eligible to receive a teaching license to be admitted to the graduate programs of study. Students who are new to the field of special education are encouraged to enroll in the Special Education Generalist emphasis in the MA degree program. This degree and licensure program is available to educators who hold teaching credentials in related fields, as well as individuals who are interested in pursuing a special education degree as an initial teacher preparation program. The Gifted and Talented Specialist emphasis in the MA degree program is an added endorsement program for individuals who are already licensed teachers. The Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Visual Impairment Specialist, and Early Childhood Special Education Specialist emphases in the MA degree are approved as Western Regional Graduate Programs that are available to students in the fifteen member states in the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education at in-state tuition rates. The School recently added a sixth area of emphasis to the MA degree, called the Intervention Specialist. Graduates of this program are prepared for teacher leadership roles that include instructional coach, action researcher, and behavior specialist. A recent change in the graduate offerings in Special Education was the conversion of the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree program to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The increased research focus in this degree program develops a set of themes that include: theory, pedagogy, research methodology, evidence-based practice, public policy and advocacy, and collaboration.
