Description:
Sustaining or accelerating economic growth while encouraging desirable
social change remains a crucial issue. Most countries have had only mixed
success in planning and implementing national development. This complex
phenomenon of social change-the issues raised and the efforts to direct
development at both the local and national levels-is the focus of the
Economic and Social Development Program.
Involved is the application of economics, political science, public
management, and sociology to planned change in a host of areas, including:
agriculture, urban development, industry, public health, NGOs and
development, education, and social programs. Students are trained as
generalists to insure an awareness of the development process-as well as the
economic, social, and political environments in which communities develop.
They gain experience planning, analyzing, appraising, and implementing
projects at the local, regional, national, and international levels. As they
refine their skills, students are given an opportunity to concentrate on
areas of special interest. The goal is to produce informed, action-oriented
professionals who are capable of examining a situation and recommending
effective approaches to development policy and management.

Description:
The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program prepares students to
assume positions of leadership in public service, whether in the US or
abroad. We define public service broadly to include governmental
organizations at all levels (national, state, local), private nonprofit
organizations (NPOs/NGOs), and for-profit organizations that interact
extensively with the public sector. The MPA core curriculum provides
students with the essential analytical, administrative, and political skills
to work effectively as public service professionals. Students then select
from a wide offering of elective courses and specialized areas of study to
deepen their analytical and managerial skills. The MPA curriculum reflects
many of today's most important developments in the field of public service
including: the remarkable growth of the non-profit sector as a major force
in public service; increasingly urgent problems of environmental management
and policy; management and governance of urban and regional organizations as
national governments "devolve" authority and accountability downward; and,
effective resource management in an era of fiscal constraints.

Description:
The participation of working professionals has always been an important
ingredient in GSPIA's academic culture. The MPPM degree recognizes that
individuals who are accomplished professionals have needs that are different
from those of the pre-professional, and gives credit for a level of
managerial knowledge and administrative skills that less experienced
students do not possess. The program has been designed with the needsof busy
working professionals in mind. The curriculum is flexible, and can be
tailored to individual interests or needs. Special consideration is given to
facilitate the advising and registration process for students who work
during the day. The MPPM degree consists of ten courses, for a total of 30
credit hours. Four components make up the curriculum: (1) foundation
seminar; (2) specialized area of study; (3) elective courses; and (4) policy
seminar.
