been more difficult to obtain in the United States than in Europe. Now UC
Berkeley Extension is offering a comprehensive program that provides
potential interpreters and translators with a solid background and also
prepares them to enter such specialties as legal, medical, or commercial
interpretation or translation. The program is limited to a total of 6o
students per term, 30 in interpretation and 30 in translation. our
curriculum planners developed this program in close collaboration with
representatives from UC Berkeley's International and Area Studies Program,
as well as with the Northern California Translators' Association, the
California judicial Council, Bay Area Court Interpreters, and directors of
interpreter services at Bay Area hospitals.
