Description:
Students are prepared to accomplish biological and technological improvement
in agricultural and natural systems to facilitate social innovation.
Training in IAD includes both breadth and depth components. Breadth
components, required of all M.S. students, aim to establish an understanding
of the issues in international development as it relates to agriculture and
the environment. These include the history and philosophy of development,
leadership and management techniques, fundamentals of crop and livestock
farming systems, and agricultural economics. Students acquire depth in their
own areas of specialization within the agricultural and social sciences. The
areas are agricultural and resource economics, agricultural engineering,
agronomy, animal science, anthropology, aquaculture, avian science,
community development, ecology, economics, entomology, environmental design,
environmental toxicology, food science, gender, geography, horticulture,
nutrition, plant pathology, plant biology, plant protection and pest
management, political science, pomology, preventive veterinary medicine,
range science, sociology, soil science, sustainable agriculture, vegetable
crops, viticulture, and water science. Practical and on-site experience with
development issues is encouraged and facilitated by guidance from the
group’s approximately 80 faculty members, who possess a wide range of
experience in international development. Graduate students at UC Davis are
officially students of the Office of Graduate Studies and work under the
supervision of faculty members who are organized in groups and departments.
Graduate students must satisfy the requirements of both Graduate Studies and
the IAD Graduate Group.

Description:
The M.S. degree is both an end in itself and a preparation for the Ph.D.
degree. The Master's program includes courses emphasizing applications of
economic theory and quantitative methods, along with elective field courses.
It is usually completed in a year of study, and prepares students for jobs
in industry and government.
The joint M.S. and M.B.A. degree program is a relatively new offering
which we have devised in conjunction with the Graduate School of Management.
This program offers a course of study similar to the regular M.S. program in
addition to the full regiment of M.B.A. courses. This dual degree program
will provide strong preparation for a range of employment opportunities.
The Ph.D. program provides intensive training in modern economic theory,
econometrics, operations research, and mathematical programming, with
elective fields from specializations such as natural resource and
environmental economics, development economics, agricultural economic, and
econometrics. Complementary fields in other areas of economics and
management are also available. It is typically a four year course of study
that prepares graduates for jobs in governments, consulting, and education

Description:
Animal Science is an interdisciplinary department, bringing together
expertise from different disciplines for the solution of problems in animal
biology and animal production. Research in the department covers a continuum
from basic to applied, but in general is mission oriented, with an emphasis
on whole animal biology. Over 40 faculty work in various disciplines such as
nutrition, genetics, physiology, and behavior. The department maintains
horses, dairy cattle, beef cattle, sheep, swine and dairy goat herds for
research and teaching purposes on the Davis campus.

A major strength of the Department of Applied Science is its access to the
scientists and facilities of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Many of the faculty have joint appointments with LLNL. Nearly all students
use the facilities of the Laboratory for their thesis research. These
facilities are some of the nation's best in the areas of atomic and
molecular physics; computational physics; fusion technology; laser physics
and nonlinear optics; materials science and condensed matter physics; plasma
physics; scientific computing; and digital media. The digital media option
is also available to engineers in the Silicon Valley through our fledgling
and evolving Distance Education facilities.
