This two year program:

  • emphasizes the administration, leadership and management of public gardens and their diverse operations,
  • offers students opportunities to gain practical experience by working with the Director and members of the Horticulture, Maintenance and Services Departments of Longwood Gardens, and

Description:
The Department of Art offers individually planned programs leading to the Master of Fine Arts and the Master of Arts degrees. A program with studio concentrations is available to outstanding candidates in the areas of ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. The M.F.A. program is offered to students preparing for professional careers in a studio field. The expectation is for students to attend full-time over a two year period. The M.A. program is designed primarily for those in art teacher education at the elementary or secondary school levels. Application requires presentation of a comprehensive portfolio in addition to general admission procedures. Admission is selective and competitive based on the number of well qualified applicants and the limits of available faculty and facilities. Those who meet stated minimum academic requirements are not guaranteed admission, nor are those who fail to meet those requirements necessarily precluded from admission if they offer other appropriate strengths. A minimum of 30 credits in an approved program of study is required for the M.A. degree and 60 credits for the M.F.A. A public exhibition and supporting paper are required for the M.F.A. degree. A public exhibition and thesis are required for the M.A. degree.
