Description:
The Master of Arts in History at the University of Maryland is designed to
provide broad and intensive instruction in bibliography, research and writing in
a general field of study. The degree may be considered as a preliminary step to
doctoral research or as advanced study in preparation for a variety of other
fields or endeavors, such as archives administration, librarianship, information
processing, public school teaching, or legal studies.
The Doctorate in History at the University of Maryland is awarded for
superior achievement in historical study and research. The major portion of the
degree is the dissertation, an original and noteworthy contribution to
historical knowledge. In anticipation of this research, students must master
bibliographic tools, research and writing methods, and general, minor and
special (or dissertation) fields of study. Competence in these preliminary steps
will be measured by successful completion of course work and by examinations.
