Description:
The Graduate Program in Cellular and Structural Biology provides training for
M.S. and Ph.D. candidates who intend to pursue careers in biomedicine through
academia or industry. The strength of the program is its diversity; faculty
research areas include cell biology, cancer biology, molecular genetics,
developmental biology, anatomical sciences, reproductive biology, immunology,
neurobiology, and aging. All graduate students pursue a program of study
designed to develop both their scholarly and laboratory aptitudes through
one-on-one mentoring by more than 40 student-oriented faculty. Relatively low
tuition rates, a competitive stipend and a temperate, year-round climate make
this "The Place to Study Cell and Molecular Biology."
Degree(s):
M.S.- Cellular and Structural Biology
Ph.D.- Cellular and Structural Biology
Research Areas:
Molecular basis of aging;Cancer biology;Molecular genetics;Cell and
developmental biology;Neurobiology;Reproductive biology

Description:
The discipline-based doctoral programs in Biochemistry, Cellular & Structural
Biology, Microbiology & Immunology, Pharmacology, and Physiology have evolved
into the Integrated Multidisciplinary Graduate Program (IMGP). The IMGP reflects
contemporary, interdisciplinary advanced education and scientific research based
on fundamental principles in the biomedical sciences. Effective with admission
for Fall, 2008, prospective students apply to the IMGP rather than to the former
individual, discipline-based doctoral programs.

Description:
The program in molecular medicine offers a research-oriented, interdisciplinary
course of study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The faculty is composed
of both basic and clinical scientists drawn from the Departments of
Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine, Cellular and Structural Biology, Medicine,
Microbiology, Pathology, and Physiology. The objective of the program is to
train future scholars in the use of molecular biological approaches for the
investigation of fundamental biomedical questions associated with the diagnosis
and treatment of human diseases. Upon completion of the program, students will
be prepared for careers as independent investigators and teachers in cellular
and molecular medicine.

The twenty-six members of the multidisciplinary Pharmacology graduate faculty
bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to the doctoral program. The graduate
faculty is comprised of scientists from the Pharmacology Department as well as
other departments at the Health Science Center (Anesthesiology, Endodontics,
Medicine, Psychiatry and Surgery). Research activities in the Department of
Pharmacology are focused primarily in the area of neuropharmacology with an
emphasis on both biogenic amine and amino acid neurotransmitter systems.
Investigators use research approaches that incorporate molecular, single cell
electrophysiological imaging, neurochemical and behavioral techniques. Another
group of investigators study the central nervous system regulation of autonomic
function. Other investigators use primarily molecular and cellular approaches to
study intracellular signaling mechanisms of relevance to diabetes, cancer and
cardiovascular disease.

Description:
Our department consists of 20 primary and 13 adjunct faculty who employ cellular
and molecular as well as integrative systems approaches to investigate
physiological questions. The Ph.D. program in Physiology is designed to provide
the academic and scientific skills necessary for students to pursue careers in
biomedical research. Formal coursework in molecular and cellular biology,
biochemistry and pharmacology are taught in a framework of integrative
physiology so that students in early stages of training gain a fuller
appreciation for the mechanisms that regulate body functions. Students
participate in research programs of the faculty. This allows the student a wide
range of choice in selecting an area of particular interest for their
dissertation research. The successful completion of this research endeavor
culminates in the dissertation. To gain expereince in teaching, advanced
graduate students participate in lecturing and conference supervision in
physiology courses under the guidance of the faculty.
