Description:
The twenty-six members of the multidisciplinary Pharmacology graduate faculty bring a wealth of knowledge and skill to the doctoral program. The graduate faculty is comprised of scientists from the Pharmacology Department as well as other departments at the Health Science Center (Anesthesiology, Endodontics, Medicine, Psychiatry and Surgery). Research activities in the Department of Pharmacology are focused primarily in the area of neuropharmacology with an emphasis on both biogenic amine and amino acid neurotransmitter systems. Investigators use research approaches that incorporate molecular, single cell electrophysiological imaging, neurochemical and behavioral techniques. Another group of investigators study the central nervous system regulation of autonomic function. Other investigators use primarily molecular and cellular approaches to study intracellular signaling mechanisms of relevance to diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Description:
Our department consists of 20 primary and 13 adjunct faculty who employ cellular and molecular as well as integrative systems approaches to investigate physiological questions. The Ph.D. program in Physiology is designed to provide the academic and scientific skills necessary for students to pursue careers in biomedical research. Formal coursework in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry and pharmacology are taught in a framework of integrative physiology so that students in early stages of training gain a fuller appreciation for the mechanisms that regulate body functions. Students participate in research programs of the faculty. This allows the student a wide range of choice in selecting an area of particular interest for their dissertation research. The successful completion of this research endeavor culminates in the dissertation. To gain expereince in teaching, advanced graduate students participate in lecturing and conference supervision in physiology courses under the guidance of the faculty.
