Description:
The Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Counseling offers the opportunity for
advanced study and professional development in the fields of Community and
School counseling. Students may earn credit toward a state-level counseling
license to practice in community settings (Licensed Professional Counselor).
Credit may also be earned toward a School Counselor endorsement on a Teacher's
certificate (or, with additional courses, a Special Education Counselor
endorsement.) A thesis option emphasizes the development of research
competencies critical to continued graduate-level study.
Admission requirements and prerequisites: An undergraduate degree in
Education, Psychology or Sociology is required. Students not meeting this
requirement will need to have 18 semester hours of leveling courses in either,
psychology, sociology, education or a closely related field. Please contact the
department for more information regarding these requirements.

Description:
The program emphases are focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of
curriculum planning, development, implementation, and evaluation in all subject
fields and at all educational levels. The concepts of curricular innovation and
teaching excellence are stressed in conjunction with expanded knowledge of
content fields and applied research. Students who want to specialize in a
teaching field may do so by taking courses in that field to support the
concentration in Curriculum and Instruction. Within this concentration, a
student may specialize in the supervision of instruction, or an initial
teacher's certificate may be earned in specified areas of public school
programs.

Description:
This concentration is designed to provide theory, research, knowledge, and field
experiences for students who plan to teach reading and writing. Reading is
presented as a linguistic, cognitive, and sociocultural process in relation to
other language arts processes such as listening and speaking, with particular
emphasis on writing and the writing process. Students select one of two program
emphases: instruction or research. The instruction emphasis is designed for
teachers and can lead to completion of the requirements for certification as a
reading specialist. The research emphasis is designed for students who want to
pursue research in reading and writing; students in this emphasis normally
pursue the thesis option.
