Description:
The counseling programs provide coursework and experiential training
designed to prepare individuals as professional counselors. The 48 credit
Community Counseling program is appropriate for those intending to work in
the counseling field or who intend to pursue doctoral work in psychology or
related fields. The 60 credit CMHC program is specifically designed for
students who plan to meet licensure requirements in the State of Indiana (or
states having similar requirements) as a Mental Health Counselor. VU's CMHC
program is the only such program of its kind in the region housed within a
psychology department, and the CMHC degree is the only counseling specialty
that leads to licensure. Students are initially accepted into the CMHC
program. Then, as career objectives are identified in consultation with an
academic adviser, students choose the program that better meets their
professional and career goals. Both programs require 12 core courses (36
credits) as well as significant experiential training through practicum and
internship. Within the core are four courses--Counseling Theories and
Practice, Counseling Processes, Child Psychopathology, and Adult
Psychopathology--designed to provide a strong and integrated professional
learning experience. Depending on their program, students additionally
choose 1 or 4 electives that permit emphasis in areas of interest and
exposure to a wide range of counseling-related topics.

Description:
The Master of Science program of study prepares advanced practitioners of
nursing. In the advanced practice role as caregiver, educator, researcher,
leader, consultant, and lifelong learner, the nurse interacts with persons
within the health care system in three levels of prevention: primary,
secondary, and tertiary. The graduate nursing program prepares practitioners
to interact in the dynamic context of the environment to achieve health.
Master’s-prepared nurses are full partners in the health care delivery
system: they help shape policy; work in multiple capacities as caregiver,
educator, researcher, and consultant; and take on roles as dynamic,
accountable leaders. Valpo’s 36-credit MSN program provides theory-based
practice for the Clinical Nurse Specialist. The MSN graduate acquires a
strong foundation in research, theory, advanced health assessment, and
nursing diagnostic skills. The MSN provides further opportunity in parish
nursing and establishes the foundation for entry into the Post-Master’s
Family Nurse Practitioner program. A Post-Master’s Family Nurse Practitioner
is attainable with two additional semesters beyond the MSN degree. Students
are assigned an academic adviser and provided guidance for implementing
research projects.

endorsement to their license. The program is highly flexible, providing the
opportunity to construct programs of individualized study depending on the

The demand for students with fluency in Chinese combined with conventional
degrees and professional experience is growing rapidly. The Master of Arts
in Chinese Studies (MACS) is an innovative program designed to prepare
students in any field of undergraduate study, with at least two of college
Chinese, for the opportunities and challenges posed by the emergence of
China as a formidable political and economic force over the next several
decades. The 37-credit program emphasizes developing fluency in Chinese
(Mandarin) language as well as an understanding of Chinese culture,
politics, and history. During their course of study, students may enroll in
up to 6 credits of graduate coursework in a discipline related to their
major field of study, assuming such coursework is available. The dual JD/MA
in Chinese Studies (MACS) program enables law students to meet the growing
demand for students with fluency in Chinese combined with conventional
degrees and professional experience. The 37-credit MACS program is an

for the opportunities and challenges posed by the emergence of China as a

Description:
The MALS degree typically appeals to people with broad interests in the
humanities and social sciences because the program provides an opportunity
for advanced study that can be tailored to meet individual interests and
needs. The 33-credit MALS program in English, which can be completed on a
part-time basis through evening study, or on a full-time basis through a
combination of evening and day study, is made up of core requirements in
Liberal Studies, the English concentration, and electives. While the core
seminars challenge students to think beyond traditional disciplinary
boundaries, the concentration encourages them to apply this conceptual and
methodological breadth to the specific field of English. Content of courses
within the concentration are typically interdisciplinary, and students are
afforded a great deal of flexibility in constructing their studies in
English.
